"Amazing care under immense pressure. Disgusting..."

About: The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

We were brought into A&E 17/10/2017. The department was busy when we got there but you could tell they were organised. The next thing, a patient in the room next us started throwing his clothes, cases, bedding, trays etc out of his room while slamming the door and shouting incoherently. I explained to my son it was a mental health episode and the nurses came along and closed all curtains asking everyone to remain in their cubicles. Security then arrived and they stood there and requested the police were called as they were not going in his room as he was so aggressive. Eventually some staff (I assume security and medical staff) got into the room and he was injected with something to obviously calm him down although this did take a good couple of injections and some time to work. The security officer was extremely rude and unprofessional. The security officer shouted at the medical team that they felt anaesthetics should be called for the man to be sedated. Whilst the patient did continue to be loud and aggressive and difficult to handle the security officer clearly could not handle the situation. The security officer was shouting 'I have already told you to get this man sedated by anaesthetics people need to ***** listen'. When the police arrived the security officer was saying the same to them but adding that they were going to 'put in a complaint because they get no support from that department'

The security officer then proceeded to tell the medical team they would take the handcuffs off the patient and let him smash the place up if they did not get the anaesthetic team down to sedate him. At one point the security officer said 'While they all ran away we had to come and deal with him'. This all really annoyed and upset me as their words were to call the police they were not going in to deal with him as he was too aggressive! The security officer's swearing was very inappropriate and unprofessional as was their attitude to staff, who are the security officer's colleagues. I believe security are there to assist the medical team with these situations not the other way round. The security officer also has no medical training to make the call if someone is sedated and would not know the medical history if there were reasons this could not happen with this patient. If this member of staff cannot handle to situation maybe they should be taken off the front line security. This member of staff did not fill me with any confidence of being able to handle a volatile situation. The medical team in the department were amazing. While our wait was (understandably) long they were so apologetic.
