"Would Not Recommend."

Went here with an injury to my shoulder, which has been causing serious pain for weeks now - which I am convinced is muscular or nerve damage. Not impressed by the forthcomingness of the practitioner who saw me, who essentially told me that I diagnosed myself before I even came, giving me the impression that they thought I was wasting their time. I was also offered no further help or advice regarding GP referral or ways to help my shoulder recover - apart from taking more over the counter painkillers.

After waiting well over an hour, and getting a quick, in and out, 5 minute check over, I feel like I have both wasted my time, and effort, in being told what I already knew, without getting any sort of viable advice or a thorough consultation.

Thank you for your feedback on our services at Westgate Walk in Centre. We are very sorry that you feel we did not give you the treatment that you felt you required.

May I explain that our staff follow local and national recommendations, as well the Trust’s guidance on treatment of minor illnesses and injuries which would have been used at the time of your assessment.

In your comments you state you had attended with shoulder pain, which had been present for weeks. Unfortunately, other than undertaking an examination and ruling out any serious condition that requires emergency treatment, the nurse practitioners can only give advice on pain relief, and follow up care should be passed on to your GP. The walk in center is a nurse led unit which does not refer on for none urgent treatments such as physiotherapy or x-ray, and the staff are unable to provide fit notes or student sick notes, this can only be undertaken by a doctor.

We are also disappointed to note that that you felt the staff where uninterested in what you had to say and we would like to assure you that your comments have been discussed with the team and have been taken seriously.

Without further details of your case we cannot make any further comment in regards to your consultation. However, if you would be willing to contact the Patient Relations Department to provide some further details, we can investigate the incident fully and provide you with more personal feedback. Please email patient.relations@nuth.nhs.uk or telephone 0191 2231382.
