"Induction for reduced movements"

About: Princess Alexandra Hospital / Maternity

26th September - Booked in for induction. Induction started later that afternoon. Staff seemed friendly.

27th September - 24 hour pesserie did not take affect so was given the 6 hour pesserie. Later that evening I had contractions. Was told by midwives that labour ward was to busy for me to go in so midwife gave me codydramol as pain relief which slowed my labour down.

28th September - as previous night my contractions stopped I was given the second 6 hour pesserie and the same happened my contractions started but was told again by midwife that labour ward is to busy and they will give me oramorph to calm things down.

29th September - I felt very down and lonely. Wondering the hospital, seeing all these babies being born, trying to have my partner at the hospital with me as well as look after our 2 year old at home. Come that night was greeted by another midwife who said they would get me on the Labour ward so they could break my waters so my labour could get going. They gave me a stretch and sweep which was so uncomfortable it made me cry. Was not taken into the labour ward that night and midwife had gone home with no update.

30th September - greeted by another midwife I explained my situation that I had been there for so long now I just wanted to discharge myself and go home! They sat and had a chat with me, went away and come back to tell me they are taking me into the labour ward and they are going to break my waters today and that's it. And that's when it all started.

After my labour myself, baby and baby's father went to birthing unit. Got a little rest over night and went home that day.

After my experience and the hospital not only did my contractions get slowed down twice! The person who fitted my canular bruised my arm and left someone else to put it in as they couldn't find my vein properly. I had to ask several times to go on the monitor to check babies movements. Not midwife was reassuring. I was constantly asking for my water jug to be filled up. I was gave false hope on the 29th when I was told I would be taken in to labour ward that night. After my labour as I had burst blood vessels rash on my shoulders upwards and in my eyes I was told by the midwife to take piriton as it could be a allergic reaction. My canular in my hand was left I had to ask 3 times for someone to take it out. It was hurting so much I couldn't pick my own baby up! The few days that I had in Chamberlain ward was unpleasant. I didn't feel like I was being looked after. No midwife kept me updated on what was happening. Every midwife I had once their shift had finished the midwife would just go and not explain what was happening. It has really upset my and it's been two weeks and I have finally got myself back to me and will try and forget about how awful it really was. Truly upset with this hospital and the staff I had around me.

Dear Anonymous,

I am sorry you have had such a difficult time with your labour and how upset this has made you. Staff work hard to meet demand and provide a high quality of care to you clearly they did not achieve that. For that I am very sorry, it is not the kind of experience I would want for me or a member of my family, so clearly this is not what we should provide to you. The information gaps and number of painful experiences throughout your visit could have been better managed through volunteer and Allied Health Professional inputs.

In order to take this forward, I am hoping you feel able to contact us more directly by email or by telephone so we can look with greater depth and insight into the difficulties you had. You can begin that process by emailing pals@pah.nhs.uk or by calling us Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm on 01279 82 72 11. We await your call.
