"A day in Acute Assessment/Medical Assessment Unit"

About: Borders General Hospital / Accident & Emergency Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as the patient),

I apparently suffered a seizure of some sort in the early morning whilst still in bed. This woke my wife who sensibly called 999 when she realised I was unconscious and not responding.

Although we live in a hard to find rural location the Ambulance arrived just as I was coming round, and I was taken to the Borders General.

There I had timely and considerate care, and during the morning a CT Scan and X ray.

I was moved to the Medical Assessment Unit around lunchtime, and monitored through the day until a consultant visit in the early evening.

He told me his assessment of what had happened, agreed that as I was then stable, I could return home, and he set up a referral to a specialist first seizure clinic.

That clinic appointment arrived just over a week after the incident, and I will be at the clinic within 33 days.

I could not have hoped for better initial treatment or a more timely referral to the specialist clinic.

Well done Borders General and SAS.

Dear Long tall Kettle,

Thank you very much for taking the time to tell us of your experiences in the Borders General Hospital.

When any illness occurs it is stressful and worrying but when it happens very acutely and unexpectedly it is often even more so. I am therefore delighted that we were able to provide timely transfer to the hospital and prompt investigations of your medical problem. I am also delighted that we were able to appropriately expedite your discharge from hospital in a safe manner whilst delivering appropriate quick follow up. When I make decisions about discharge, I am aware that people are more comfortable in their own surroundings and sleep far better in their own beds! Therefore, if discharge can be supported safely, then it is always the best choice!

I sometimes wonder if patients and relatives realise how much of a massive difference their kind words on Care Opinion make to the morale of the healthcare staff that help to look after them and hundreds of other patients on a weekly basis. I can assure you that I will forward your review to our team in MAU and would like to thank you once again for taking the time to let us know of your experience. I hope that you are now well on the road to recovery!

Best wishes,

Lynn
