"Maternity and labour"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Maternity care (Ward 31)

(as a service user),

I recently had my 3rd baby on the 5/10, my previous 2 were born locally, however this time I had to give birth at the RAH in Paisley due to a few reasons.

I arrived on the ward at my expected time and was surprised to find out no one knew I was coming ( the consultant had booked me in for induction a number of weeks in advance) I was shown to a bed where we then waited 45 minutes for anyone to come and book me in or even introduce themselves.

Once I was settled in it was fine, I understand they were quite busy and as I didn't really require much attention I was left to just progress through the early stages of labour, the midwives were nice, they ran me a bath and offered me pain relief, other than that they just left me to it. I did get a bit upset as it was through the night and I couldn't have my husband with me, but again I get why they can't allow it on the ward.

Once I was finally ready to go to labour ward it was a huge relief, I walked into this incredible, air conditioned room, and was met by an absolute angel, her name was Laura S, and I hope she knows just how incredible she is as a midwife and as a person! I genuinely could not have got through my induction without her, it was definitely the worst of all my labours and she was amazing, she was so supportive, and I'm sure she wanted to strangle me at times - especially when the gas and air cheek kicked in - but she just smiled and reassured me throughout every one of my contractions.

I don't remember getting to say goodbye to her before she had to move on to help her next lady, but I wish I could have hugged her and said thank you, she really made a terrifying situation seem calm and relaxing.

When I returned to the ward I felt quite isolated, despite being surrounded by people, as again it was night time, and since coming home I have noticed some things written in my notes that do not match fact, nothing too important but still not accurate.

Busy hospital, busy ward, not the best experience, but Laura - she was just incredible - please tell her.

Dear Fyfe87

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience via Care Opinion and please accept my apologies that we have taken some time to respond.

Congratulations on the birth of your 3rd child. I hope you are both doing well. I am very pleased to hear that you felt supported and cared for during your time in the Labour Ward in the RAH. The Clinical Service Manager has passed this feedback on to the team and to Laura in particular. It is very rewarding for the team to know what a difference they made during this stage of your care.

The Clinical Service Manager would like to look more closely at the issues you raise regarding your time in the Obstetric Ward. In order for this to happen I would appreciate if you could contact me to provide some more details at Pamela.mcgoldrick@ggc.scot.nhs.uk

Many thanks

Pam
