My mother had a prolonged stay in Geddington ward following a minor surgical intervention to alleviate one of the complications associated with her advanced pancreatic cancer.
The staff on Geddington ward are to be commended for the high levels of professionalism as well as their support to both patient and family during a very difficult time in mum's on-going treatment.
What was particularly noticeable, and unusual, was the consistency of this professionalism and support across all staff working in the ward - ancillary/support and nursing.
The general atmosphere in the ward was calm and also nurturing two qualities often missing from clinical settings - particularly in the very stressful times the NHS currently faces.
Our journey has not been an easy one and for the first time in six months we found ourselves not having to keep an eye on what was going on for fear that something would be missed.
Most importantly we found ourselves being able to be mum's family working alongside the professionals as part of that larger team of people who all have her best interests at heart.
I am reminded of the principles of 'No decision about me without me' and am thankful to the team at Geddington Ward for doing their jobs so well and supporting us to do ours.
