"First admitted via A + E in dec 2009 -..."

About: Royal Albert Edward Infirmary

What I liked

First admitted via A + E in dec 2009 - Staff very good, over worked but friendly, Cleanliness throughout hospital generally good

All Nursing Staff on the Ward were excellent, but overworked

Most Staff on Swinley Ward were Good - Student Nurse was Excellent

Staff in Endoscopy and CT/Ultra sound Scanning/Xray excellent

What could be improved

Communication between Consultants and Patients is virtually non-existent - no quality of care - very impersonal. I saw a different Dr virtually everyday having to explain everthing over and over again.

Consultants do not care about patients - no continuity of care. I was told at one consultation that I may have cancer and further tests were ordered. I then waited over three weeks for someone to contact me with the results before contacting the hospital - relieved to know that I was in the clear but disgusted that nobody bothered to contact me to inform me.

Food is not healthy - butter for cold toast in morning - no alternative, skimmed milk not available. Too much fried food. Not enough fruit available for desserts.

Appointments and administration is absolutely ridiculous!! i was discharged without paper work which was never forwarded to me. Appointments for ongoing operations were cancelled on numerous occassions - 18 week pathway is a joke - it starts again everytime something needs dealing with.

Anything else?

An elderley lady on my ward was obviously suffering from dimentia (as well as being ill) The senior nurse in charge of the night shift had no patience with her and was very rude to her - shouted all the time.

The next day this lady died surrounded by her family on the ward - her last conscious night of her life was spent with the nurse from hell
