"Clearer vision from the other side of the fence"

About: Lorn & Islands Hospital / Accident & Emergency Royal Alexandra Hospital (Paisley) Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as a service user),

This year I retired from a senior nursing role in the NHS. As with many of these roles at health board level, there can be a disproportionate focus on challenges, problems, errors and poor outcomes.

While not having actively chosen to experience the NHS services as a customer, I found myself on the wrong side of my road bicycle, after an unfortunate accident in Argyll 12 days ago. As soon as I came round and saw my strangely angled fingers I knew that my first NHS experience for many years was looming.

Apart from the pain and shakiness that I felt after the accident, I was also apprehensive for my colleagues who would now have to treat me.

All I can say is that the staff of a) the Scottish Ambulance Service, b) Lorn and Islands Hospital Emergency Department and c) Royal Alexandria Hospital Ward 23 were excellent in every way. Never once did I feel concerned about, or doubt the skills and knowledge, the caring and kindness with which I was treated.

I had time where I observed how other patients and relatives were treated, and this was always done with respect and empathy.

While all the staff were excellent, I want to mention, in particular, Rosie and Jenny in LIH ED and June in Ward 23, RAH. Thank you so much.

Our NHS doctors and nurses care hugely about their patients, they are driven by a desire to do the right thing for people and this was so obvious to me as I sat there, bemoaning my recklessness in coming off my bike.

In addition, most of the processes which can cause frustration for patients and families worked well for me. Transfers were effected quickly, information was well communicated across hospitals and follow up appointments were arranged around my needs.

This experience made me proud of our NHS and hugely grateful to all those who go out of their way to care for people every day.

Dear Patxr2

I am so sorry to learn about your unfortunate accident and resultant injury. It sounds frightening and painful. I hope you are making a good recovery.

Thank you so much for taking the time to provide your positive feedback about the care you received. I will make sure that staff, in particular, at Lorn and Islands Hospital, Emergency Department are made aware of your posting and how much you valued the way in which you were treated.

We strive to always provide the highest quality of care and I am very pleased that we were able to achieve this for you. There is much that can be learned from your comments about getting things right.

I hope you will soon be back on your bicycle, keeping fit and active and enjoying the Argyll scenery.

Very best wishes for your retirement.

Dear Patxr2

Thank you so much for sharing your experience on Care Opinion.

Reading your post reminded me of when I became unwell a few years ago and experienced the NHS as a patient. My experience was similar to yours: dedicated, highly skilled, person-centred staff at all levels.

Whatever your previous experience, it can be extremely daunting having to attend hospital and so it so it was pleasing to read about the skills, respect and empathy of all of the staff who cared for you.

Like Fiona and Marie, I wish you well with your recovery.

Take care.

Martin.
