"Trying to get an appointment in 48 hours"

About: General practices in Fife

(as the patient),

Called my GP for an appointment and was offered one in 5 weeks. So much for the government's target of seeing a GP within 48 hours.

It's only when I pushed the receptionists they offered the service and then they still made it difficult when I'd refused to tell them my condition for which I needed to see my GP. They do not like it when I replied with I cannot give that information to for data protection and confidentiality.

If I was wanting an appointment with a receptionist I'd give information but it's a qualified GP I want to discuss my medical condition with. I want a decent system were I can get an appointment with a GP in a reasonable timescale.

Dear disabled visitor

Thank you for your post and sorry for the delay in getting back to you; before doing so I wanted to get some information about the situation from the Primary Care Manager.

She has explained that in their current contract, practices must have available on the day appointments for emergencies. There are no timescales for giving routine appointments. Receptionists are trained to ask a few pertinent questions so that they can assist the clinical team in allocating the available appointments for the greatest medical need.

You may wish to consider discussing the issue further with the Practice Manager. You may also be interested to know more about the work going on in Fife to ensure sustainable services. If you would like to provide me with your email address I would be happy to add you to our distribution so that you are kept up to date with the changes to service provision in Fife. Just drop me an email using the email address below advising that you wish to be registered on Fife's Participation and Engagement Network or feel free to call me directly to discuss.

Regards

Louise
