"Cycle parking"

About: Queen Alexandra Hospital

(as a volunteer/advocate),

I don't use a car because using cycling / walking / public transport are better for my health and other people's.

I recently went to QA Hospital by train and cycle.

I didn't want to put my bike where it might upset people, or block access for ambulances, patients etc. So I spent some time cycling round the grounds looking for a cycle park without success.

In the end I went to reception to ask where to put it.. The man said "Are you staff? No? Well we don't have cycle sheds for the public". I explained that I wasn't looking for a shed, just the right place to park my cycle. He waved outside to a pedestrian area and said "There". There was nothing to say that it was acceptable to put cycles there.

The NHS wants people to take exercise. QA should make it very clear that they welcome people arriving by cycle. (RHCH in Winchester has a cycle shelter near the main entrance - well done to them.)

Update posted by Mary Moore (a volunteer/advocate)

Thanks Kathy. It was only a trivial inconvenience to me, so no apology needed, but what is needed is a rethink of the message QA gives patients, visitors and fellow-professionals about how you expect people to travel.

Signage for bicycles is the smallest step. Installing cycle hoops for people other than staff would be useful; also amending your maps to show people where to park cycles. This needs management backing.

Please can you let me know the outcome of referring it to the Estates team?

Dear Mary

As promised I forwarded your comment to the Estates Team of the Queen Alexandra Hospital and this is their feedback

Thank you for your comments regarding cycle storage.

There is a link on the intranet you might find useful for Cycle parking

http://www.porthosp.nhs.uk/find-us/getting-to-qa-hospital.htm

however the map linked from this page does not differentiate staff/public bike stores

we have now requested this to be updated.

The nearest cycle parking is located in the Main Car park opposite the pay machines.

I hope you find this useful Mary for future visits to the Hospital. Thank you again for bringing this to our attention.

kind regards

Kathy
