"Unerstanding of mental health issues"

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford)

Suffering from mild autism and complex post traumatic stress syndrome, as well as a severe physical illness, it has been my experience that the hospital needs to teach its staff far more in understanding and handling of the extra load carried by a patient like me,

I beleive there is an intiutive within the hospital which is using an amount of funding, to teach staff how to ensure that anyone with specific extra needs who finds hospital difficult, actually benefits from their stay in hospital. This has not been my experince, with the sception of a handful of astutue and caring professionals there.

I commend this initiative. Every member of staff should have to have take part.

I developed life altering CPTSD due to bad experineces early on in my visits to thw hospital. I thought this was a thing of the past and old practices but having beeen back in and out over past few years I am very upset that in some staff this carries on.

It is time the hospital stopped medieval harmful attitudes to patients like me, who not only have the burden of severe physical illness, but also carry mental health issue, which I have found leaves me vulnerable to any memebr of staff who is either ignorant (vaguely forgivable) or, at its worth, abusive neglectul or downright cruel.

My own consultant is ver understanding,, most of their registrars also. But when you are left in the hands of other teams, frankly it can be frightening and devastating when they use your mental health issues as an excuse to blame any and everything on you. If you have a physical symptom that they dont understand they leap on to your mental issues and blame them. If you are upset, angry, frustrated, they blame your mental health issues rather than take a step back and consider what is actually going on. I am not the only patient who feels this way, many do in Devon, We want to be proud of our local hospital and support it, but for me, it is my 'unsafest' most feared place. because there are only a handful of staff who I trust, The rest should be made to undertake intense training in how to care for the more vulerable. In this day and age, no one with any form of mental health issue, should be left sobbing in a room because they are scared or spoken to so reprehensibly badly. or sent home with no care plan or even shoes on their feet. The lack of communcation between staff can be utterley unbelivable.

There is no doubt my physical illness has been a huge devastion on my life, but, the way I have been treated by the the hospital by some staff, has had an equally devasating impact on me and my family. It would surely be logical and sensible and more cost effective, to make stays in hospital calm, kind and caring. It would for sure benefit me, and it would be better for the hospital. If I can keep on trying to forgive the hospital the very least you can do is train people better in humane understanding.
