About: Harrogate District Hospital

What I liked

I was kept well informed about my treatment and an initial delay before my operation was credibly explained to me. The surgical procedures and aftercare were first class and were carried out in an efficient, professional and yet personalised manner.

What could be improved

About 8.00am on the day after my operation the consultant cleared me to be discharged. I did not finally leave the ward until almost eight hours later. This seemed to be despite the best efforts of the ward staff to arrange the necessary visits from a doctor and pharmacist to review my medication needs. Although each person I saw (some on more than one occasion) seemed to be trying hard to "get me out of there" the system seemed uneccessarily lengthy and complicated. Surely it must be the resposibility of higher management to devise a workable system for their frustrated staff. I was not the only patient on this day to be left confused and irritated by the discharge process and, talking to friends and acquaintances, I find that this is a very common problem.

Thank you for your feedback, which is very valuable to us.

I am glad that you found your care to be of a high quality overall.

We are aware that our discharge procedures need improving and are currently undertaking a large piece of work on that. This includes improving information for patients, to explain why their discharge may take some time, streamlining our procedures as far as possible, whilst maintaining patient safety, and speeding the dispensing of medicines from our Pharmacy. We hope that, over the next few months, patients will see a real improvement in discharge procedures.

Best wishes
