"Mixed Outpatient Department Experience"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / General Medicine (Wards 9-12)

(as the patient),

I am a health care proffesional in glasgow and recently had an appointment at  hairmyres outpatients

well where to start
1 waiting areas are overcrowded and drasticly far to small for the size of department
2 reception we are expected to que for extended periods of time outside consulting rooms with patients and doctors and nurses needing in and out of these rooms  so much for confidentially
3 reception desks area looks cluttered dusty and completly unfit for purpose all you see is cables upon cables
4 where reception is there is no privacy
5 was taken to a room to have 'obs' done in a room that looked more like it should be a disposal hold with orange bags on the floor at this point i should mention that the staff taking my obs were really very plesent.
6 doctor was running late eventually saw him quick appointment but couldnt help notice that the examinatiom counch had tape on it covering what i assume was rips - infection control guys

7 after my appointment i had to have bloods done in what i can only assume was at one point a storage cupbord it was tiny and dark how is this allowed to be used as a venepunctute room? - at this poitn i woulf like to point out that staff followed proper PPE

8 after this i had to put on a follow up appointment only to dicover you have to re join the que for reception another long wait

Thank you for taking the time to post I am sure the site will respond directly with regards to your observations re scheduling, flow of patients and need for privacy and dignity in all care settings,

However I wished to pick up on a number of points. As a health professional you will understand that space can be a challenge when services grow and develop, making it a difficult to provide care in the best and most appropriate manner, I am glad however that despite the space issues staff did what they should to ensure save, effective and appropriate care and treatment.

As lead for Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) I will have the IPC Team review the department first thing in the morning. Regardless of space issues our departments should be immaculate and I can assure you we will work with the site to ensure that is achieved at the earliest opportunity.

I do appreciate this feedback so thank you for affording us the opportunity to address these issues as best possible.

Irene

Dear Jsca

Many thanks for taking the time to post your comments.

I have reviewed the department today along with our Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Senior Nurse.

We are aware of the challenges regarding the reception area and general space within the department and some of the rooms. However this should not mean the environment is not cleaned appropriately. We do have cleaning schedules for all of the clinical areas and we shall introduce the same to ensure that these standards are also applied to the reception area providing a clean and clutter free environment.

The couch will be replaced and I can only apologise that clinical waste bags were left in error in the nursing assessment room. I have addressed this with the nursing staff and we shall ensure this does not happen in the future.

I am extremely pleased to hear that the staff followed all appropriate IPC measures and were pleasant throughout your appointment.

We are currently undertaking a feasibility review with our estates department regarding the reception area and I shall update once this is completed,

If you wish to discuss any aspects of this further please contact me on 01355 584664.

Gordon

Dear Jsca,

Following on from your previous post we have continued to reviewed the department to ensure that environment is clean and standards are maintained at all times, we have introduced the cleaning schedules I mentioned and the couch has been replaced.

We are still working on the move of the reception area. This change shall provide additional seating and also address the problems you have identified with people standing outside the rooms.

I shall update again once these changes have taken place

Regards

Gordon

Dear Jsca,

I know you first raised your concerns some time ago, but I wanted to take this opportunity to update you on the changes we have made to the reception area in the Outpatients Department at Hairmyres.

We have purchased new reception furniture and put this in a configuration that means patients queue in an area away from the consulting rooms. This will hopefully address the issues around confidentiality which you raised. The new arrangement also improves patient privacy at the reception desk. New power sockets are being installed this week which will address the issues with trailing cables that you noted.

I'd be really keen to hear your thoughts on the new layout if you have the chance to visit us again in future.

Kind Regards,

Cameron
