"18-20 month waiting list for child ENT"

About: Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (Edinburgh) / Ear, Nose & Throat

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter received a referral from her GP to ENT in Edinburgh in august 2017. When I called today to check progress and work out how long she is likely to have to wait I was told it is 18-20 months. I double checked it wasn't weeks but assured it's months and suggested I go back to my GP.  Daughter can't hear out of one ear now and this is really beginning to upset her. This wait seems crazy! I did end up taking her privately a few weeks ago to get the wax removed but the audiologist could only get a small amount out as it then started to be uncomfortable for her and he didn't want to keep trying. He cleared enough he could see the ear drum but it's now blocked again already.

Dear Parent worried

At the outset, please can l say how sorry l was to read of your experiences with the length of time your daughter is having to wait for her ENT appointment. Unfortunately over the past few years Paediatric ENT has experienced significant increases in the number of children being referred and as a result the numbers on the waiting list have grown and children are waiting much longer than 12 weeks for routine appointments.

I have shared your feedback with the senior team and they too would like to offer their sincere apologies for the length of time your daughter will have to wait. Please be assured that the service is working hard and looking at all options to reduce waiting times for their patients.

If you feel that your daughter’s condition is deteriorating then please discuss this with your GP and depending on what they think they may request that the service re-examine her referral based on the new information. If you would like us to look into this further I would be grateful if you can please contact the Patient Experience Team;

Email: feedback@nhslothisn.scot.nhs.uk

Telephone: 0131 536 3370

Once again, please accept my apologies.

Kind regards

Jeannette
