"I did experience good nursing care from..."

About: Pinderfields General Hospital

What I liked

I did experience good nursing care from a one or two nurses and particularly the sisters on the ward.

What could be improved

Everything could have been improved. I think there is a a poor staff culture at this hospital and a dismissive attitude to patients who at times are treated as if they are a nuisance. I witnessed older patients unable to get to the toilet on their own being ignored when they called for help. Patients complaining about being in severe pain were told 'll be with you in a minute' and no one came. I became very dehydrated because I couldn't eat or drink and I was too ill to insist that this was addressed. No one monitored my condition and when my daughter told them of it they contradicted her and told her I had been drinking tea - but this wasn't true, They had brought me some tea but I was unable to drink it and I was dehydrated. They were annoyed at having to deal with it and acted and if I was petulant child refusing to drink. I felt vey vulnerable and I think a lot of the other patients did too. I had to go back into hospital for the same condition and had to go to Pontefract as there were no beds in Wakefield. The care there was brilliant but after a couple of days I had to go back to Pinderfields and again it was awful.

Anything else?

Pinderfields hasn't got a good reputation. I have had other close relatives who have patients in this hospital and even though there are exceptions, there are too many staff who just have a bad attitude and get away with it. Hygiene and general routines are sloppy, nurses get easily irritated and at ttimes are quite unpleasant especially if challenged or if patients or relatives point things out.
