"Lack of communiction"

About: Musgrove Park Hospital (Taunton)

My mother has been was in Musgrove for 9 weeks. During that time I had to fight for them not to discharge but to investigate why she was falling. This they did, Subsequently she had a spinal operation.

I am next of kin and live 2 - 2.5 hr drive away depending on traffic. I have been given misinformation on more than one occasion, like she came in with pneumonia - which she didn't.

They did not even inform when she moved wards.

When I went to see her a couple o Saturdays ago we were told that mum was complaining of neck pain and a doctor was called and she went for a scan. 2 days later the doctor told me Mum had slipped off the commode and had injured herself. Why wasn't I told before.

I visited on Tuesday Mum had scratches on her left arm, no-one could tell me how she got them. She also had a chesty cough for which a doctor was called one that had been treating Mum on Eliot Ward, they said she was likely to be moved to a community hospital for more rehab. I specifically asked them not to send her to Williton Hospital as that would add at least another 3/4 hour on to my journey time making it best part of 3 hours travelling each way,

I phoned on Wednesday and asked how mum had got on at the spinal clinic to be again told that she was likely to be moved to Williton,. Again I asked that she not go there because o the long distance I have to travel to see her.

My wishes have been totally ignored and to make things even worse the nurse phoned to tell us she was moving and it sounded like Wellington Hospital, my husband asked her 3 times to repeat and it wasn't until this evening when I had finished work that I phoned and found out it was Williton.

I am her next of kin, I visit I do her washing and my wishes are totally ignored.

I am angry at the system and lack of communication and .consideration for those of us for live a distance away.

The individual nurses who do the day to day care do a good job. Wards are clean and the food looks good but a severe lack of communication.

Dear Anonymous

Thank you for taking the time to write your post on the Care Opinion website. I was very sorry to read of the communication problems you experienced whilst your mother was an inpatient on one of our wards. I understand how very distressing it can be when you do not live locally and I am sorry that your mother was moved to Williton Hospital against your wishes. I do hope that your mother is continuing to recover from her period of ill heath.

The Ward Sister is currently on leave at the moment, if you would like to contact her on 01823 342012 I am sure she would be more than happy to discuss your concern in more depth. Alternatively, you can contact the Patient Advice Liaison Service (PALS) on 01823 343536 or email them on pals@tst.nhs.uk.

May I take this opportunity to thank you once again for contacting us through Care Opinion and sharing your story.

With kind regards

Christine
