"Worst emergency which I visited"

About: Leicester Royal Infirmary / Accident and emergency

It's third hospital which I visit in UK and to give honest opinion-the worst one. At first I've never before seen that system of appointments like e.g. I was 7th on the list, after 3 or 4people more came I was 10th. Later again 6th and again 12th. It made my waiting time much longer. I could understand that some people are in more urgent condition than the other but it should be resolved in another way. For example 2gp's who are designed to see people with minor injuries (and separate list for those ones) and the rest of staff to take care about more serious casualties. It will make everything clear and fair for everyone. In the situation which I was I felt like not really important patient. To be honest meantime while I was waiting for any doctor who can see me my symptoms gone almost at all. So probably this system will help patients to treat themselves on them own. After almost 2hrs sitting in the lounge I had been seeing by nurse. They only took my pressure and heart rate and asked me to gave urine sample. The Nurse was really unprofessional and I didn't feel treated well as they played with their phone all the time when I had assessment with them. For me it looks quite like no respect. As a patient I think doctor or nurse should speak with me, ask if I'm all right or just be with me just in case but this nuse was interested more by their phone than me. After this the nirse told me that I should go to take my urine sample. The nurse wasn't kind at all. At least I met one helpful staff member on the desk. They checked estimated waiting time for me, give me some advices. Later I was move to 'primary care' list. On reception I heard that it will be faster then but again same story - no. 2 in a list, later 4th. Again 2nd and again 6th. I'm writing my opinion still sitting there as it's already another one hour waiting in primary list. I had strong abdominal pain by which I had problems with breathing about 21. After 22 I came here and waiting already 4hrs - as I said my symptoms starts going away by this time. It's not clean at all - everywhere cups and other rubbish on the floor. Another thing that also samples (like urine) has a time when are helpful - after 1-2hrs usually terminated and aren't helpful anymore as showing nothing in examinations. I think people here doesn't know or doesn't care about this because no one took a sample from me when it was ready. I heard only 'give it to the doctor' but I don't know when I will see them. I definitely won't recommend this place to anyone.

Dear reviewer,

We are very sorry to hear about your experience in visiting the Emergency Department. Each patient is initially assessed by the team before waiting to be seen in order of clinical priority. This means that we see the sickest patients first. Depending on the seriousness of the patient’s condition, there are different areas of the Emergency Department they might need to visit. Some patients wait to be seen by a GP whilst others are waiting for the injuries section to be seen by a Doctor in our Emergency Department. The most serious and urgent patients are brought in via the ambulance bay which you wouldn’t see whilst waiting. This may go some way to explaining how the system works and why you may feel like you had to wait for delays. We are also working hard to reduce delays which have been caused by high demand.

We are sorry you had to wait and will take on board all your feedback. We would like to investigate your concerns regarding the delay, the behaviour of the nurse and cleanliness. In order to help us do so can you please email Kerry.Johnston@uhl-tr.nhs.uk with your details (name, address, NHS number and contact details) plus a summary of your concerns.

Kind regards,

Vivek Pillai
