"Lack of compassion"

About: Victoria Hospital / Diabetes & Endocrinology

(as a relative),

Devastated and heartbroken at losing my nephew to DKA, he had been diagnosed here in Kirkcaldy and experienced few hypos throughout his diabetes journey. This auto immune condition is perilous and sadly devastating. Various factors attributed to my nephews DKA, which we are all still in shock about. Even more upsetting is the fact, that he attended the Diabetic Clinic, here at Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy Fife and even when my sister in law telephoned them directly to cancel his appointment after he had tragically passed away...NOT one person from the Diabetic clinic have contacted the family to offer their condolences or even enquire as to how he passed away. Our family are not looking for apologies, We would just like a bit of respect after all he was under the umbrella of Fife NHS diabetic clinic for many years.

Hopefully this raise awareness of the perilous condition Type1 is and how the diabetic clinic may deal with families in the future. I cannot believe they would not be interested to find out from a medical perspective how and why he died? Compassion costs nothing but is a priceless gift for those in need.

He was a true gentleman, not a statistic.

Dear AUNTY NADS

I was so sorry to hear about your nephew and appreciate this is a devastating loss for you and the family; please accept my most sincere condolences. I will make sure your post is passed on to the team who I am sure will be very upset to read that the family have felt a lack of compassion at such a difficult time. I have no doubt some one will wish to make contact and therefore would be most grateful if you would get in touch to share your nephew's details. This will allow us to establish the position and make direct contact.

Kind Regards

Louise

Can you please contact me so I can get to the bottom of this please. I had a call from Dr J Chalmers, Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology earlier today. The team had read your post and were deeply saddened to hear that you feel they have demonstrated a lack of compassion. The team recognised your nephew from your post and were also saddened when they were made aware of his death. They wish to express their sincere condolences to the family and to assure you that they do know of the circumstances surrounding your nephew’s death. A team member would be happy to contact your sister in law by way of follow up; however they wish to be sensitive in any approach at this stage and would be keen to establish that she is aware that you have posted.

Please consider emailing or phoning me directly on 01592 648154 or on louise.ewing@nhs.net.

Regards

Louise
