Earlier this month, my father's condition declined and the GP arranged for end of life care for him at home, as he had requested. From that moment forward, the care he received from the district nurses at the Craignair Clinic in Dalbeattie and from the STARS team in Dumfries and Galloway was exemplary. I have been here with my mother and my brothers all week, and we have all been so grateful for the kind and respectful way the carers treated my father, who is completely deaf and extremely weak. He is, in fact, still alive as I write, defying all medical expectations, as we were told 48 hours ago that time was very short. Somehow, though, he is still breathing.
The nurses who came out today recommended that we cancel the daily visit by a STARS carer as there was nothing more they could do for him, and I wanted to expression our appreciation of everything the team has done for him over the past week. Every single carer who has been to provide personal care for my father - to wash him, change him, help him onto the commode etc - has been so kind and cheerful and competent and professional. Without exception they have treated him with respect for his dignity, and with a care and kindness that has been humbling to witness. Their friendliness and kindness to us, too, has meant so much, and we could not be more grateful.
