"Second class treatment for elderly heart patient"

About: County Hospital / Accident and emergency

When my mother was taken to this hospital by ambulance suffering chest pains, for the second time, you would have expected the underlying condition to be investigated. Not so!

Having discovered her wildly erratic pulse, they proceeded to treat the symptoms with the intention of sending her home again. When I asked the registrar in charge, when they would do an angiogram to find the cause, they said there was no one qualified to do this there and they did not intend to send her to Stoke, which has a special heart unit, Instead my 87 year old mother would have to back to GP to ask for a referral!

All of this will delay treatment and add risk to her life. I am deeply shocked and disappointed at this inadequate response to a life threatening condition. Is this really the best the NHS can do?

I am sincerely sorry to read your comment around your experience of our A&E Department. As an organisation, we very much value all feedback and I would be very grateful if you could contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) to provide further details to allow us to look into your concerns.

You can contact PALS on 01785 887687 or via email at patientadvice.uhnm@nhs.net.

With best wishes
