"My visit to the Endoscopy Unit, QMH Dunfermline"

About: Queen Margaret Hospital / Endoscopy

(as a service user),

I recently attended the spotless Endoscopy Unit at the Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline for a Sigmoidoscopy appointment, where my experience was quite exemplary. Here is my 'patient journey':

I received a letter inviting me to attend the Endoscopy Unit approximately 2 weeks' prior to the date offered. Together with the letter was lots of useful information to read in relation to: the procedure itself; sedative options for during the Sigmoidoscopy; bowel preparation and its (almost immediate) effect; guidance on taking medication while administering the bowel cleansing preparation; and foods allowed/not allowed in the days leading up to the procedure. Also enclosed were sachets containing the bowel preparation with separate detailed instructions. All of which I found very helpful and read in advance and, again, leading up to the appointment.

On the day: throughout my appointment staff were welcoming, friendly and happy to answer any questions I had. From the waiting area Susie (Staff Nurse Susie Wallace) introduced herself and led me to a private room to take details, blood pressure, ask about my preference in relation to pain (I chose Entonox), and simply check with me how I was feeling. She was kind, friendly and personable.

I was then led to a room with cubicles and toilets, where I got changed into a hospital gown and pants. There was a small seating area with TV in the room, where I sat for just over an hour and relaxed (as best I could! ) watching TV and then listening to meditation music with my headphones on. Staff Nurse Jacquie Byrne then entered the room and introduced herself. She was kind and calm in her approach, and appreciating that I was a little nervous did her best to put me at my ease, which certainly helped.

After walking a short distance to the room where the procedure was to take place, I was feeling a little more assured that all would be okay. She introduced me to Hugh (Mr. Hugh Colvin), Mr. Chigaru, and Wendy (Staff Nurse Wendy Brookes), all of whom welcomed me warmly and then I lay on the bed. I was shown how to use and tested the Entonox mouth-piece, finding it quite easy. Hugh explained the procedure to me and as I had no questions it began.

I didn't need any Entonox until I was advised to take it during the last stage of the procedure, which took minutes to complete. It was fascinating to see the whole examination on a screen. Very interesting .. it was also a good distraction while the Sigmoidoscopy was taking place. Wendy asked questions about diet and the importance of having a healthy and well-balanced one. Another excellent distraction.

Feeling relieved that the procedure was complete, both Jacquie and Wendy chatted with me while my Report was written up. I was then wheeled to the recovery ward where Susie welcomed me back with a kind smile, checked my blood pressure etc. and asked whether I'd like a cuppa and sandwich. I was ready for that!

I got dressed and could hardly wait to eat ... and see my husband, whom Susie phoned to let him know that I was ready. Another lovely gesture.

Very many thanks to everyone for making my visit such a pleasant one! I will continue to sing your praises....
