"ECG"

About: Leigh Infirmary / Cardiology

Was asked to have an ECG by consultant. I had no problem with this as I have had this procedure on previous occasions without concerns or distress.

I was invited in to the room by a young gentleman who was to perform the ECG. They asked me to take everything off my top half. I questioned if I needed to remove my bra and they replied yes. I asked if this was necessary as it has not been a request on previous occasions.

They replied "it just makes things easier" but offered me a gown. A gown to which fastened at the front so made very little difference as to my dignity. I was not offered a chaperone at any time.

I was totally uncomfortable and as we were both young adults I felt very embarrassed.

I do not understand why having a bra removed made things easier, it is totally unnecessary and feel my dignity was violated.

(I have no concerns as to the way I was treated with my consultant, in fact this was a good experience. )

Thank you for contacting the department, giving us the opportunity to allow the Head of Services in Cardiology speak to you personally to explain the procedure undertaken at your appointment and that this was in fact the correct procedure. It has, however, highlighted a gap in the process whereby you did not receive the letter that asks whether a chaperone is required. This was due the procedure taking place immediately following your consultation. This has been taken forward as a learning point and posters are now in place stating:

Your appointment may be with a male physiologist please contact reception to discuss any issues.

Please request a gown if you wish to have one.

Some tests we can allow a relative or carer to attend with you. Please ask the physiologist as you enter for the appointment if you wish to have a chaperone, relative or carer to attend with you.

I understand that you were reassured by this conversation and we would thank you for improving the service by highlighting your experience.
