"Counselling to help me move on from a life changing event"

About: Ealing IAPT

(as the patient),

I won't go into exact details about what happened to me but suffice to say that in mid 40's I experienced an event that completely changed how I felt about everything from my day to day life to even being alive.

I tried to help myself and did fairly well but just couldn't move on from the last bit and I thought about taking my own life as I was miserable a lot of the time and just stopped caring.

My doctor referred me for counselling and there was a long wait, however it was well worth it.

My counsellor helped me work through the event but more importantly focused on how to help the negative feelings work through my body using comforting and also on the tapping teqnique.

I now feel I have the tools I need to keep my emotional wellbeing on track - and very importantly I now feel I can use these teqniques for anything that may come up in the future.

I am only sorry I did not know about these things earlier in my life and I would recommend everyone to try them.

Thank you for your help and support.

Dear "Little Miss Sunshie"

From reading your post its clear you have been through some very difficult times. When these result in despairing thoughts it can be very difficult to carry on or as you say, continue to care. You definitely did not do fairly well but very well in keeping yourself going and I am pleased that you found help to go through the event and get over the last bit with one of our counsellors.

We are really sorry about the wait that you had, it concerns us and we do the best we can with our resources but ideally we would like to see everyone much more quickly. It sounds like you had complex issues to work on but for straightforward psycho-education and tools and techniques to manage emotional well-being we do offer an instant access Stress Control group which runs weekly (for more information please refer to our website).

Many thanks indeed for sharing your story with us on Care Opinion, I will circulate it to the team as positive feedback really helps to motivate our clinicians.

From all of us at Ealing IAPT, best wishes for the future.

Yours sincerely

Dr Louise De Haro
