Seen an orthopaedic consultant for a first time dislocated shoulder. All that I was asked was "is it feeling okay" and then told not to do anything too strenuos with it for the next 6 weeks, while they had a quick look at my previous x ray from A&E a week ago. When i mentioned i was a physio student, they then used this to justify that i wouldnt need referring for any physio. All of this happened within 5 minutes of me sitting down. Next i was asked if I had any questions and thanks for coming in, which confused me as i had expected them to at least ask me to take my coat off to look at my shoulder, and see if there was a possible subluxation and that It was moving appropriately. When I asked if I could start doing light resistance/strengthening work they said that I shouldnt do anything at all that would put any stress on the shoulder for 6 weeks until I go back and see as there could be 'complications'. This is completely false as surely I need to start gradually doing progressive strengthening exercises on the shoulder before 6 weeks is up (according to all shoulder dislocation guidelines anyway). I feel the doctor put absolutely no effort into this treatment, and although to them I may have been a routine dislocation patient, and I do understand the time pressures doctors do face, I did expect some sort of assessment to make sure the shoulder is in proper positioning and some better advice than 'not to put any stress on it' which i find completely subjective and could be taken in many different ways. Finally, is it acceptable that because I am a physio student I dont get referred to see another physiotherapt? at the time i was taken aback by how fast the appointment went and didnt question anything, but thinking back now i find that this doctor was very poor and there was actually further questions i wanted to ask on the numbness down the side of my arm and the problem i'm having with certain movements which i completely forgot due to the rushed nature of this appointment..
