"Test Results"

About: General practices in Ayrshire & Arran

(as a service user),

I have been suffering from persistent thrush for over 1 month, despite purchasing medicine at the pharmacy. I saw one of the GP's where a swab was taken and sent for testing. I was advised to ring six days later for my results, and so I could be prescribed any relevant medication. When I called for the results they had not been looked at and was asked to ring again today. I have just called again, only to be told they had "just come in". I pointed out to the staff member that they had arrived yesterday and expressed my dissatisfaction. The staff member promised to bring this to the doctors attention and that I should call back in an hour. Approximately 10 minutes later the GP called back with results and arranged for a prescription to be sent to the pharmacy.

This is the second time in 2 weeks I have had a problem receiving test results, the previous occasion was with my 3 yr old daughter who had a urine infection. I was advised by the GP that it was very important we discover exactly which bacteria caused the infection as it could have very serious implications in her later life. After 1 failed sample, a subsequent one was sent. Again, on the 1st phone call for the results nobody had looked at them. The next day, again nobody had looked at the results so the reception staff member took it upon themselves to diagnose the best course of action and informed me that they would let the doctor know they had discussed this with me so no further action would be required. Unacceptable in my opinion, shoddy service and inappropriate behaviour from non medically trained staff.

Is this the level of service we deserve? I do not believe so.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Gladioli,

I am sorry you have had such a problem getting both results. without sounding as if I am 'passing the buck' GP practices are independent contractors and as such, initially, you should take your concerns and complaints through their internal (and audited) complaints process. The practice manager can help you with that.

For what it is worth, I agree that I would want my results to be interpreted by a professional with the correct skills.

By way of explanation, I wonder if perhaps the September weekend public holidays have contributed to your results not being seen as quickly as you were led to believe.

I hope you are recovering now,

Kind regards,

Eunice
