"Visiting relation was awful"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus

We have been visiting my sister in law for nearly 2 weeks. Parking not good. going up spiral with a poorly knee no joke. Walking up to the main entrance there are huge signs on pavement no smoking area. Patients and visitors were literally standing on the signs smoking. Patients should not be allowed to do this surely. This should be enforced by someone.

Once inside we went to the lifts. For most of the time there was only 1 lift out of 3 working!

Had to go to F floor. Sister in law was eventually put in a side ward which wasnt that clean. Scuff marks on walls, floor not that clean. She had soiled the bed and the sheets were left hanging in a bag on the wardrobe door.

Having said all of that the care she had from the staff was brilliant.

We couldn't fault them at all. Very kind and got the appropriate things done for her. My review is the standard of the place itself wants sorting out. Very dated. Well aware it's a huge place but the general standard is awful. Very scruffy.

Thank you for this feedback and taking the time to praise the care and also highlight those areas where we need to do better. We will raise these issues with our Estates and Facilities team.

I apologise for the inconvenience caused by some of the lifts being out of order. One of these lifts will very be back in service soon with the other following shortly after.

Both QMC and City are smoke-free hospitals and we recognise we need to take different action to address this. We have appointed new smoke-free and tobacco control experts. From experience we believe that challenging every smoker or forcing people to stop smoking isn’t the best approach and so are looking at a new way, which includes a range of interventions and activities that focus on changing the culture within the Trust.

We have recently introduced Parking Charge Notices to try to combat inappropriate use of parking spaces and we are exploring the possibility of increasing capacity at our sites whilst encouraging the use of public transport, including the tram and the Medilink park and ride service.

If you can tell us which ward you visited these issues can be addressed with the team directly. If you are happy to, can you contact us in the patient experience team so we can get more detail and feedback directly to the ward? It would also be good to share the kind comments about the standards of care with the team who have looked after your sister-in-law. If you feel able to, you can contact the patient experience team on 0115 924 9924 ext. 66623 or QMCPET@nuh.nhs.uk.

With kind regards,

Sarah Kennedy.

Patient Experience Officer.
