"Staff saved my life"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Accident and emergency

I have just left the hospital after almost 4 weeks.

I was admitted, via a 999 call, to A&E late one night and, due to the complexity of my condition spent time not just in A&E but 3 additional wards including 10 days in Intensive Care.

During this time I was sent, as an emergency, to Derriford Hospital where I received a life saving process.

I returned to NDH and back to the ICU before returning to the Victoria Ward for recovery and physiotherapy.

The care I received cannot be faulted, everyone was so wonderful not just to me but to my wife and children.

All the Doctors had time to explain to us exactly what was going on at all times.

The coordination between the NDH and Derriford, even over a bank holiday, was astonishing.

Things got done, tea was provided, comfort was given, my life was saved..........

Departments treated in:

A&E, MAU, Respiratory, Coronary, Intensive Care.

Dear Patient

I was very sorry to hear you have been so poorly which necessitated a lengthy stay in hospital. I hope that you are starting to feel better now that you have returned home.

You must have felt extremely anxious and it is wonderful to hear that you received excellent care which was extended to your wife and children. It is reassuring that the doctors continuously kept you informed of your care pathway and treatment.

Thank you for also letting us know that the co-ordination of your transfer between our hospital and Derriford Hospital went smoothly even though it was a Bank Holiday week-end.

I have forwarded on your thoughtful comments about your recent experiences to the Managers of the Emergency Department (ED), Medical Assessment Unit (MAU), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Victoria Ward, and the Respiratory and Coronary teams, where they will be gratefully appreciated and shared with the staff involved in your care.

Kind regards

Jayne
