"Not Fit For Purpose"

Maple Ward... My husband was a voluntary patient on this ward...It is so very poorly run..One particular Consultant is not fit for purpose..They do not understand what you say and should not be able treat such vulnerable people..This is a very poorly led ward. The staff on this ward do not engage with patients and from what I have witnessed just sit around with their clipboards talking between themselves..As for respect and dignity for the patients when it comes to phone calls!!!! I would call my husband on the office phone and the call would be transffered to the managers office, a member of staff would then sit in the office while my husband was on the phone...On quite a few occassions my husband didn't really want to speak because the staff member was present...I had to tell my husband to ask the staff to step outside whilst he was on the phone for reasons of privacy..I asked members of staff numerous times if they could help my husband have a shave as I thought that in hospital there is or should be a duty of care to patients...Well guess what not so on this ward...Staff too lazy to help..I actually done this when he came home on some leave after 5 weeks of asking...The food here is apparently awful...Not from what I'm told..It is mostly stodge and no one likes to complain...I could go on and on...This is not a hospital that I would choose to have a loved one or friend or any vulnerable person that needs help in recovering..It simply will not happen...Be very wary if someone is unfortunate enough to be placed in here..Be aware of one particular Consultant as they do not understand what you say and is not fit to be treating your loved ones..They hate the fact that you may challenge them...Try to be at ward reviews with your loved one or friend.

Dear 'Lizzie'

I am the Matron for Meadowfield Hospital and I am saddened to hear that this was your husband's (and your) experience of Maple ward and this genuinely isn't the feedback we generally receive.

I am not in a position to respond to each of the points you raise as I am not aware of who you are, however, what I'd really like is to discuss your concerns with you directly - my contact details are below

if you would prefer to speak to someone not involved in the service you can contact the Sussex Partnership Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) either at:

Swandean

Arundel Road

Worthing

West Sussex BN13 3EP

Or on 0300 304 2198.

We are committed to listening and learning from feedback we receive as one way of improving our services.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Patrick Fenton

Interim Modern Matron
