"Lewisham A&E"

About: University Hospital Lewisham / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

I had the unfortunate need to attend Lewisham A&E this weekend.

My biggest problem with the place (I've been before) is the heat (it's boiling), the space (it's tiny) and the layout means you have to announce your problem to the packed waiting room.

This aside, the assessment room feels and looks more like a cupboard, which is not pleasant for patient or triage nurse.

The triage nurse was pretty nice, but once you get through to the ward part, several of the nurses were unprofessional.

They pretty much leave you sat in a chair waiting, with no information, no 'hello', no offer of water in the very hot room.

A couple of them were also rolling their eyes at other patients and when my partner asked for some water the nurse looked completely put out, even though she was just leaning on the counter and chatting to her colleague. I happened to get an amazing Doctor, but only saw her once and then got a procession of other people through, over a 5 hour period, who never introduced themselves.

Overall, it was a thoroughly disappointing experience and maybe I want too much, but surely some tiny changes could make a massive difference to the poor patients.

Thank goodness I wasn't on my own in there.
