"Bowel scope screening"

About: Southmead Hospital

Attended for bowel scope screening today and very unhappy with the experience. All staff polite and friendly but several negative comments to make. Firstly, although I was initially seen quickly and taken to get changed and ready, I was then left in the waiting area dressed in a hospital gown for over an hour before I was seen. When somebody did turn up, they didn't even apologise for the wait, let alone explain what caused it. I do understand that procedures can't always run to the second, but a simple "sorry to keep you waiting" goes a long way. It would be even nicer if during the wait someone could actually acknowledge you and perhaps give you an idea how long the wait would be? Even let you know where you could get a drink? I was very thirsty by the time I left. The next problem was that the consent room was not private at all. It opened right into the waiting area, and while I was there another patient was taken in to discuss their procedure and I could hear every single word. So much for privacy and confidentiality. Then when I was finally taken into the room where the procedure was to be done, I was asked to remove my underwear by the male nurse, and had to do this in the room in front of all the staff: no cubicle, curtain or anything. Yes, I was wearing a gown but I still found this extremely embarrassing. I would much rather have staff of my own sex anyway for this sort of intimate procedure, but if a male has to be present I really don't want him watching while I remove my underwear! It left me upset and tense which I am sure added to the discomfort of the procedure. Left feeling upset and humiliated.
