"Positive experience from admission to discharge"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / General Surgery (Ward 5)

(as the patient),

I recently suffered sever abdominal pain and phoned an ambulance. I was admitted to accident and emergency initially, subsequently moved to ward 4 then ward 6 after operation. I was alarmed by the sudden onset of my condition but was put at ease immediately by the staff in A & E. The doctor who treated me, Laura, was competent, knowledgeable and a good communicator, involving me every step of the way. She quickly got to the root of my problem, inflammation of the pancreas. This came as a shock to me and my family. Laura was reassuring about treatment and explained clearly what would happen next. I was transferred to ward 4. Every member of staff that I spoke to in Hairmyres A & E went out of their way to help and reassure me with their caring, expertise and humour.

I was transferred to ward 4 and again met by caring informative and supportive staff who arranged further tests.

Next day I met consultant Mr Duncan who explained further test. An ultrasound scan showed multiple gallstones, the cause of pancreatitis. After a full discussion with me Mr Duncan arranged operation to remove gallstones and gallbladder the following day.

I was naturally anxious about this procedure but the physical and emotional support that I received from all members of staff within Ward 4 kept me grounded and I felt well prepared for the operation.

Staff within theatre in the run up to the operation showed the same caring, professional attitude and I felt reassured and confident in their presence.

After the operation Mr Duncan spoke with me back on the ward, reassuring me that all had gone well. In my dealings with Mr Duncan I felt inspired by his approach. He is straightforward, clear talking, reassuring and confident.

After my operation the following day, I was moved to ward 6. The treatment I received continued to be first class. All staff members from doctors to tea ladies made me feel as if I was their main priority. The standard of physical care was excellent but so was the emotional/psychological support that I received throughout. I cannot praise the staff highly enough for their dedication and professionalism. They worked so well as a team and are a credit to their senior charge nurse, Sharon Bruce.

I was discharged home 4 days after initial assessment and all aftercare was fully explained to me. I was given medication to see me through until I see my GP.

My experience in Hairmyres Hospital was positive from admission to discharge. Every member of staff that I encountered supported me every step of the way through a physically painful and emotionally trying time in my life. My admiration for each and every one of them knows no bounds.
