"I feel I have had to defend myself to doctors"

About: Royal Hallamshire Hospital / Endocrinology

(as the patient),

I have thyroid disease. However, the levels fluctuate. I have had blood tests to try and find the cause. They have come back negative. For five years I felt I have had to defend myself on assertions from Doctors that I was not correctly taking my thyroid medication. I was placed under the supervision of a specialist at the Hallamshire Hospital. He decided after a couple of blood tests and thyroid pill adjustment that I should only be treated annually (this is despite a history of fluctuation). After 3-4 months I was crawling and I missed 2 months at work with no sick pay. I could not get treated by my own doctors as I was under the specialist although I had a blood test at my own Doctors which showed my thyroid very low. I had to wait months for another appointment at the Hallamshire. I told my Doctors I was furious at the consultant, I was fully prepared to tell him directly just what I thought, however when it came to the day of my next consultation he was not there.

I saw another consultant and then 3 months later another. Meanwhile I had an investigation (camera down the throat and into the stomach) a biopsy from this showed irregularities pointing to celiac disease. On a recent trip to the Hallamshire for my thyroid I was sat in the corridor for about 45 minutes. The nurse told the consultant I was waiting who answered, let her wait it won't do her harm. Once I was in there I explained the results of the biopsy I feel his attitude underwent a positive change as he said celiac disease is well noted for absorption problems, he actually told me on goodbye to look after myself.

Big deal, I feel I have been treated like a parasite by doctors for a good five years and I am not in the mood for placation. Let me ask, does anyone think that I want to waste time and breath just messing about going backwards and forwards for blood tests?

I am furious and there is no other outlet possible. I am contemplating what the law could do for me.
