"Compassion and Dignity"

About: Southport & Formby District General Hospital

My 92 year old aunt has spent 4 weeks on ward 9B. She was frail and needed support with eating, drinking and toileting.

Her short term memory was poor and she needed lots of reassurance. Throughout her stay she was treated with care and compassion by all the staff. I saw her with medical , nursing and support staff who without exception directed their comments to her,and not to me, about her. Despite a very busy ward, medical and nursing staff spent time with me explaining her condition and gently preparing me for the end of her life. They worked towards her discharge in accordance with her wishes and sadly the day of her discharge she died.

The dignity and compassion shown towards her and myself as we sat together throughout the night was wonderful. Thank you so much 9B you are a credit to the NHS and we must ensure that as a society that we continue to fund you properly.

Your care is much appreciated.

Firstly may I take this opportunity to express my condolences for the loss of your aunt.

We are pleased to hear that you found our staff helpful and professional. Ward 9B is a very busy ward but we are glad that this did not affect your aunts care.

Thank you for your comments, which will be circulated to the teams involved in her care.
