"Waiting for my results"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

After speaking to my GP he advised I present myself at A&E for treatment as I couldn't move with backpain, also had loss of sensation in arms and legs. When I was in A&E I had the very best of care and attention. I had my first MRI within 2 hours, transferred to the ward and results showed a bulging disc that was touching nerves. Daily care was first class with consultant seeing me daily. When the tingling etc didn't settle I was then seen by a neurologist who recommended a 2nd MRI to show another part of my spine as tests he done with a needle proved I had a lack of sensation. I was then discharged that evening after spending a week in hospital. Dr advised the results would be looked at and they would be in touch with plan of action going forward.

12 days later I still haven't had results! ! ! ! I've had to call hospital to get letter sent to my GP. GP called today advising report not in yet and I just need to rest at home until they have it.

Aftercare has been terrible in my opinion! I don't know if I'm doing more damage, I could be doing excercises to help myself but no! This is dragging on and on and all I'm being told is to rest!

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Mrs Worried Sick,

Oh this must have been, and I suspect still will be, a very anxious time it must be distressing. l wonder if it may help if you know when your results will be available to your GP. Sometimes the not knowing adds to our concerns. If you would like me to look into this, please contact me with your detail and I will see what we can do.

My email address is Eunice.godwin@aapct.scot.nhs.uk and my phone number is 01563 826222.

Best wishes,

Eunice

Dear Worried Sick,

I am very pleased to hear it has been helpful (who said the NHS wheels grind slowly!).

I think your post flagged up some things to me. We sometimes get told out communication is not the best (can you believe it!) I think this can be the case when staff pass information which they genuinely believe to be true. For example, I was told that GPs can access 'PACS' and see the result of your MRI (not the actual MRI). I confess that I thought this too. While investigating for you, it was clarified for me that this is not the case. I will raise this as something we should communicate to staff as I am sure it would be helpful.

Also, I am sure this would be difficult and expensive and maybe not possible but it would seem a good idea if GPs could access results via 'PACS'. As you told me, your MRI results would be important to establish if you need Physiotherapy. Before you can benefit, you need the results of the MRI to go to the GP so the GP can refer you to Physio. if it is appropriate. I wondered, if as a development, Consultants could refer people direct to Physio where appropriate and save the waiting.

I am sure there will be sound, logical reasons why these are not viable, but I will pass these thoughts on. if there are any changes regarding any of the above, I will post an update on CO.

Take care and get well,

Best wishes,

Eunice

Dear Mrs Worried Sick,

I would just like to thank you for taking the time to provide feedback particularly as you have had such a difficult few weeks. I am pleased that Eunice was able to provide some reassurance and I hope you get the results of your MRI scan soon.

I was pleased to read that you had a good experience in the Emergency Department and that you had your scan performed so quickly. I will share your feedback with the wider Emergency Department Team.
