"Dread my family being re-admitted."

About: New Cross Hospital / Accident and emergency

Had the unfortunate experience of needing to call 999 for my mum recently. fully accept the queue in a and e as it appears corridors are now the norm however being told I was not allowed to go with my mum who was delirious and to 'come back in an hour when in cubicles' was not - especially as when I rang up (from around the corner) to see if she was now in cubilcles I was told that whilst she wasn't, I was allowed to be with her!

Not one person made eye contact in the monitoring area. Not one person had on a name badge - it was impossible to see who was in what role, so when you ask for water get told, oh I'm not a nurse so I don't know if she is allowed.

Luckily the issue was a UTI however my concern then was the lack of preventative meds she had missed - now 4 days and was told by the dr oh just give her them.... what all of them? yes all of todays are dine. Yet I knew some were twice daily so luckily only gave her the evening dose - I questioned if she was allowed water then as she had been put on a drip but not given a drink- the doctor told me of course! I said well how would i know this - the doctor told me I should have asked. that it was my responsibility to ask. What if she had been alone? she was delerious. she immediately threw up all tablets and when i asked dr about this eh said "look I have done my job, any further issues discuss with the ward" Of course I tried to explain that this was not entirely acceptable the doctor said "what are you going to do - go to the press?! (no!) have we not done everything for your mom? looked after her? for the last 30 mins I have done everything for her, checked xrays, checked bloods, sorted a bed" erm as I pointed out to the doctor.... That's your job! for which I had already said thank you when i pieced together that she was moving to a ward.

The following day on the ward C25? there was equal chaos. one girl had her drip beeping for over an hour despite me telling 3 staff - she therefore had no medication/fluids in that time. no staff wearing ID again so no idea who to complain to and the place was dirty - someone emptied a catheter and when I put chair back noted urine all over the floor. When taking obs the BP cuff and O2 sats monitor were not cleaned between patients - my mum had unfortutely not been out of bed for 4 days and they had not sourced her infection at that point, so fingers were very dirty as despite the strong sense of urine she was not given a freshen up until the 2nd day of admission.

i was told by a member of staff (nurse?! who knows) to take her medication home. Yet the next day noted she still had not had important heart meds - this is becuase they are not kept on that ward and would be another day coming from pharmacy - surely they should have noted the drugs she needed, relised none in stock and kept her home ones in order to dispense these. mum told them she takes oromorph/ tramadol for pain no one educated her to start on a lower type of analgesic.Pals wouldnt handle it as mum needed to consent!
