"Bring back protected mealtimes"

About: East Surrey Hospital

(as a service user),

I have been in East Surrey as a patient many times over the years and always have a fantastic experience - just wanted to know, what happened to protected mealtimes? I used to see signs about it. Now theres not set time for meals and you are constantly disturbed. I don't think the patient next to me was able to go a single meal without someone coming to see her - and the doctors just ignore that you have your food, more than once they would just come up to my bed and draw the curtain while I was eating, forcing me to leave my food until it was cold. Im frequently in barts as well due to my condition and the difference is huge, the lady next to me was even fed by a junior doctor - if you are on the ward at a mealtime then you help and you do no disturb the patient. Doctors need to learn that it isn't only their time that is valuable. East Surrey needs to bring back protected mealtimes - and enforce it strongly, especially to the doctors. I got sick of eating cold food

Dear frequentpatient

Thank you for your feedback and I am disppointed to hear of your experiences. It is concerning that your experience has meant that you are disturbed during your meal times, which unless clinically indicated should not happen.

I am disappointed that protected mealtimes have not been evident and will discuss with other senior nursing colleagues firstly to complete a protected mealtime audit so that we are able to ascertain our position and secondly to understand where we may need to undertake some further work.

It would be interesting to know which clinical areas you experienced this in; if you could like to email me on Nicola.shopland@sash.nhs.uk with this information.

kind regards

Nicola Shopland
