"My wife's treatment at Ayr Hospital"

About: University Hospital Ayr / Cardiology

(as a relative),

About three weeks ago my wife needed to go to Ayr Hospital for a cardiac ultrasound, we arrived 15 minutes before our appointment time and were asked to take a seat and wait.

We waited for an hour and fifteen minutes before we were called, when I asked about the delay I was made to feel I was at fault. I asked if I could be present during the examination as my wife gets very concerned about her back, The cardiac team agreed to me being present, it was not pleasant watching how they treated my wife. My wife was on a bench or couch, they dragged her around on the bench with her feet and pressed the ultrasound instrument firmly into her body. My wife later told me it felt too firmly pressed in. I wanted to report this on the day it happened but held back.

After the appointment we were not given any information about what would happen next or if there was anything we needed to do. We waited well over two weeks for a further letter from the hospital with the results of the scan, in conversations with other people we should have called the hospital after two weeks. However, we are elderly and not used dealing with hospitals so were unfamiliar with the process.

When we did ring the hospital they said the results had been sent to our GP and we should contact them. had we been told this is what would happen we would not have wasted the hospital's time but would have gone directly to our GP.

I just would not want another person treated in this way.

Dear lovecq53,

I spoke with our Fiona McMillan, Head of Service for this is area and she asked me to post her response -

"I am very sorry; this is not what we expect and not the normal experience of our patients. I wonder if your wife would like to contact me by phone for a chat about her experience so we can look into the specifics of this. If your wife would prefer, we could meet to have a chat. If we can arrange a suitable time to chat, I am sure it will be of help to us both to understand it better. Thank you for taking time to share this. It gives us a chance to look at what we do and change things where it is required.

Fiona McMillan
