"Plastic Surgery Breast reconstruction"

About: Southmead Hospital

At the initial meeting, I was clearly informed of the processes and timetable involved when having a DIEP reconstruction, and I was given the opportunity to ask questions, which were dealt with in an unhurried way. Preliminary scans indicated I needed a partial nephrectomy but reconstruction still took place when predicted.

The care I was given on the ward after the DIEP was meticulous and sensitive. I was given frequent reports on my progress which I was also able to monitor to an extent using the useful Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) chart. I was discharged after six days, as predicted, because I was fit to leave hospital - not simply to free a bed. A second operation to adjust the reconstructed breast and reduce the other should have entailed a two day stay but I unfortunately developed a hematoma. This necessitated a second operation and my stay was extended to five days. Again, I could not fault the nursing care and attention I was given, once the problem had been identified. Notably, the Registrar was especially vigilant, calling in to see me several times before and after the operation.

The whole experience of having DIEP surgery has been enhanced by the outstanding quality of care, professionalism and friendliness of the Plastic Surgery Breast Team. The nurses have always responded quickly to emails and telephone calls and dealt with any issues promptly. Before and after operations, they explained clearly what was required of me in relation to exercising and caring for myself after discharge. The support offered has been both welcome and appreciated. My several appointment times for their clinic seem to have taken into account the distance I need to travel so that I can arrive on time. And their clinics keep to time!

From the first meeting with the excellent consultant surgeon, I felt confident going through the reconstruction process. I never felt I was 'just another patient' wanting reconstruction. I have been so impressed by the surgeon's thoroughness and attitude that nothing less than the best will do. And is it just a coincidence (or another indication of their thoughtfulness when treating each patient as being unique) that having made the observation I hadn't liked staying in an internal room on another ward, which had no natural light, after my DIEP I found myself in a room with two huge windows, flooded with natural light, overlooking the hospital campus? It might seem a minor factor, but it meant much to me during those six days.

My gratitude to the Plastic Surgery breast team who have looked after me so well, will never diminish. Their work is to provide the 'gold standard' reconstruction: they are a 'gold standard' team.
