"Long and unnecessary waiting times for surgery"

About: Sandwell General Hospital

My father had a surgery scheduled for 12.30pm on 14 August 2017 and he had abstained from eating and drinking from 6.30 am. He was made to wait until 5.30pm that day when he was eventually informed that his surgery would have to be cancelled. I am puzzuled as to why the hospital books in 7 people all at once knowing full well that not all patients will be seen and making them wait and abstain from food for more than 12 hours for no reason.

I believe the current surgery system is flawed and it needs to be better organised.

Thank you for taking the time to write about your father’s experience at our Trust. I am sorry that he did not undergo surgery when it was scheduled, this is not the standard of care that we aim to provide for our patients. We do everything we can to avoid cancelling surgery. However, in circumstances where this does occur, we will work hard to rearrange the operation as soon as possible. If you would like to discuss your father’s experience in more detail please call Gail Barratt, within our surgery team, on 0121 507 5501/2697. Kind regards Toby Lewis, Chief Executive.
