"Broken hand?"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Accident & Emergency Crosshouse Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I was dismantling my son's bed when a metal bar fell and landed on my hand. I went to A and E at Crosshouse where they xrayed my hand. When the xray was developed they said they were not sure if my hand was broken due to the swelling and I was to go back in 10 days, they gave me a splint and another A and E appointment. I went away but couldn't wear the splint due to the pressure from the swelling.

I went back to A and E a week later due to the pain and was told without another xray that it was fractured, which could clearly be seen from my first xray. Again I was given a splint even though I told them I couldn't wear it and already had one. The nurse said the ortphapaedics might put a plaster cast on it but they couldnt be bothered as everyone else hates them. When I told them the strongest over the counter painkillers were not working I was told to persist with them even though on the pack it says not to take for more than 3 days. I then went back to the orthopaedic who had one look at the xray saying yes there is the fracture but it looks like it's healing up, had a quick look at my hand and discharged me. Even though I told them and A and E I was in pain on another part of my hand they didn't seem to care.

I am now in a lot of pain and left with a swollen hand where I can't move my thumb or index finger and a splint I can't wear. Feel as if I just wasted everyone's time the way I was treated from start to finish. Hopefully won't need to go back soon but definitely won't be going back to crosshouse.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Myboysjam,

I am so sorry you feel this way about your treatment and you are dissatisfied with the outcome. I wonder if you it would be helpful to discuss this with one of the A&E doctors. If you would like to contact me I can arrange this for you and we can look into it. I will be back to my desk on Monday, if you would like to email me your details my email address is eunice.goodwin@@aapct.scot.nhs.uk,

Our hands are so important and it makes simple tasks really difficult when one isn't behaving they way we want it to. I do wonder what we can learn from your experience so we can hopefully improve this.

I hope your hand is beginning to heal,

kind regards,

Eunice

Dear myboysjam,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback. I am disappointed that you had a poor experience of our service.

I hope the pain in your hand is improving. I am concerned that you are having difficulty moving your thumb and index finger. I wonder whether you would agree to be re-examined by one of my consultant colleagues? This would give us the opportunity to ensure that your hand is healing and that you are given exercises to improve the function of your hand. I would also like to ensure that the other area that is painful is fully examined. We would be able to show you your x-ray if you think this would be helpful. I would be grateful if you email me your details directly I can arrange this for you. My email address is Claire.Gilroy@nhs.net

Your feedback highlights the importance of communication and listening skills particularly when patients return with the same injury. I am sorry that we did not listen to you and I am sorry that you felt you were wasting our time (you were not).

In order to ensure we learn from your feedback I will ensure your comments are shown to the wider Emergency Department Team this afternoon. I hope this will allow all of us to reflect on our own practice and make a difference to future patients.
