"My experience with 111 service"

About: Ipswich Hospital / Accident and emergency NHS Ipswich and East Suffolk CCG

(as the patient),

I tripped over and fell onto an asphalt path onto my face causing a crack to my brow. I rang 111 and after a series of questions read from a text was advised to attend my nearest A&E which is over 20 miles. I had intended to do this anyway, but decided to give the service a try. Bearing in mind that it was the a bank holiday and exceptionally sunny, it was a slow journey. I should add that the service had said that they would give my details to the hospital. 111 didn't do this and apparently never do, according to a&e. I was feeling quite unwell and unsteady by this time, and as I am in my seventies felt I should have rung 999 however.

I was dealt with fairly quite quickly, but my brow had swelled up a lot by this time and was still bleeding and very painful. The doctor gave me painkillers, treated the wound and gave advice. No antibacterial cream or antibiotics for my eye. By Sunday, my eye had completely closed and was oozing pus. We then travelled 20 miles to an out of hours chemist to get antibacterial cream. I hope the infection is better or else I shall have to travel another round trip of 40 miles to A&E for treatment. Not good is it really.
