"Appalling"

About: Dewsbury & District Hospital

The staff are extremely slow and unprofessional. My grandma was left without her drip attached multiple times. Every time I'd go to reception to ask a nurse to come they would say 'hold on a minute, just finishing some paperwork'. That one minute would turn into 2 hours until we would have to re ask. The staff here are more bothered about how many visitors are around a bed than the patient.

Extremely slow ridiculous service. Only one or two nurses here treated us with understanding and respect. The rest were just moaning and groaning half the time.

They went to the point where they asked me to look after another patient whilst they changed my grandmas drip. I am not here for other patients. Also whenever my grandma needed a wee the nurses would take ages so me and my family decided to ask for the pan for urinating ourselves and help my grandma because by the time the nurses would come my grandma would have wet the bed and then the nurses would show a moody face when having to clean the bed sheets. Only two nurses were respectful towards us out of the countless others.

The staff need training on how to talk to visitors. Rather than crowding round the reception and having meetings about how many visitors a ward has how about look after the patients as much as possible.

The treatment service is very poor. The patient next to my grandma was breathless at 11pm. I went to reception and asked for doctor but before I could even say something the silly staff said 'sorry just a minute we are compeleting some paperwork'. Is paperwork more important to the staff of dewsbury or patients?? I personally feel half the staff don't deserve to be in this field. Good for nothing. Leaving drips unattached, making 5 minutes into 1 hour.

Making sly remarks is another thing that didn't sit right with me. When I would come in to visit my grandma, because of my headscarf these staff would assume I'm here for the brown lady in the ward. Stereotype.

I advise everyone to avoid Dewsbury Hospital as much as possible. The staff would make us clean our grandma which we had no issue with but what are the nurses for ?? Paperwork??? What's the point of having them when we as a family are made to bring pillows from home, change bed sheets, help granny urinate. If a patient had no visitors here they wouldn't last long. Hardly any heartwarming staff.

They also asked my two young cousins to bathe my grandma on the bed. A 13 and 14 year old. How is this even possible? One staff went on to telling us in a morbid way when my grandma wasn't sat upright 'she will choke and die'. The nurse should watch their language.

Must avoid.

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments on NHS Choices and I apologise for the delay in responding.

I am disappointed to read of the care and treatment that has been provided to your grandma.

From what you have described, is not something we would expect anyone to experience when using our services or especially, when visiting someone.

We do take comments extremely seriously and would like the opportunity to look into your concerns further.

Given that this is a public website, it would not be appropriate to discuss this further on here with you.

It would be helpful if you could contact our PALS team who would be happy to have a chat with you about your experiences. They can be contacted on 01924 542972 or email pals@midyorks.nhs.uk.

Thank you again for your feedback.

Kind regards

Clare Blackburn
