My mother had been treated in critical care unit by the most amazing nurses and staff you will ever wish to meet. However it turned into a palliative care issue within a week. Her life supports and everything bar drugs to keep her comfortable were withdrawn. We were told that she would pass within two hours up to two days. Here we are nearly a week later.
Hospice care was discussed but we have suddenly been moved to a private room in a ward. We feel we have been dumped here, no thought with how the family will cope. Someone is with Mom at all times until she passes this is what my dad wants. However in critical care there was space to make a drink and a recliner chair so he could sleep near mom. Now there is nothing.
There needs to be systems put in place for palliative care where relatives can also be comfortable to look after them. The management don't seem to care. I understand this is a hospital but compassion in end of life care needs to be given thought in this hospital. Please do not read this as a knock at the nursing staff, they are exceptional in critical care (not quite so in wards) they are admirable in a hard job.
