"Nurses could have had a bit more empathy"

About: Croydon University Hospital / General surgery

(as a relative),

A relative stayed on Fairfield 2 ward after an operation. I was not that impressed with the care received. There seemed to be no urgency for anything, even things as important as pain medication. They also seemed to be unsure which medication they needed, but considering they had just had an operation, they needed strong medication.

The nurses also at times couldn't remember their name and just feel they couldn't be bothered to remember.

Night times were very loud on the ward, no consideration given for people trying to sleep - lights left on late at night, nurses laughing loudly at nurses station. Overall was not happy with certain things, and even though they came out a few days later, I feel things could have been managed much better, and the nurses have a bit more empathy.

Thank you for sharing your observations about the ward and I am sorry that you had a negative experience.

Activity on a ward continues all through the night, and noise can often be difficult to avoid. However, the matrons and ward sisters monitor feedback about this issue closely and so your comments are very useful.

We have introduced ear plugs and eye masks which are available on every ward and have recently improved the way that these are promoted.

We value all feedback and take it seriously. I shall make sure that the ward team are made aware of your concerns so that further improvements can be made.

Kind Regards

Hilary Frayne
