"I recently had my baby in the Princess..."

About: Princess Anne Hospital

What I liked

I recently had my baby in the Princess Anne after a long and complicated labour. From a planned natural birth at Ashurst Birth Centre I ended up having an epidural, induction and c-section. Unbeknown to us baby had hydrocephalus, he needed surgery and was cared for in the neo-natal unit. The staff at the Princess Anne were absolutely brilliant. The surgeons were careful to explain everything fully and were happy to spend time discussing our questions. The nurses were amazing and were so kind, patient and really helpful especially with expressing so I could breastfeed once my son was recovering. I had been determined not to go to hospital to have my baby as I thought it would be clinical and impersonal. I found the opposite to be true - everyone involved was wonderful on a professional and personal level.

What could be improved

There were a few occasions when the communications between the different departments could have been better, for example a couple of messages slipped through the net between the neuro-department in the General Hospital and the ward I was on in Princess Anne.

Anything else?

Thank you to all the staff involved in caring for my little boy and helping him to recover and come home safe and sound.

Thank you for your comments – we’re glad to hear you had a good experience. We’ve passed on your thanks to all the teams involved including the neonatal unit and midwives.

We will also review the communication between the teams at the Princess Anne and the neurological unit. We are keen to improve our service and it would be helpful to have some more details about what you felt went wrong with our communications in your particular case. If you would like to get in touch with us directly, please email pals@suht.swest.nhs.uk or call 023 8079 8498 (unfortunately we are unable to contact you as we don’t get your name or other personal details through the NHS Choices website).
