"Care at lincoln hospital"

About: Lincoln County Hospital / Accident and emergency Lincoln County Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

Went to docs as 18 weeks pregnant with abdominal pains and didn't want to stretch a+e services. They tried to get me assessed by the surgical ward at the hospital as concerned it might be appendicitis, surgical ward wouldn't see me unless gynaecology checked baby was ok. Gynaecology wouldn't see me unless the surgical ward assessed me first. So I had to take myself to a+e, which I was trying to avoid in the first place.

After 3 hours sat waiting in a+e watching people come and go, I felt ignored by 4 doctors and 5 nurses when trying to give a urine sample to them - much more interested in chatting, I was assessed by a member of the surgical team, telling me it wasn't appendicitis by prodding my stomach - no further assessment. I then got transferred to maternity ward after another 2 hours of waiting in there waiting room watching other people come after me and go before me, I found the nurse station as I was very upset worried and frustrated. I asked when I was to be assessed as after nearly 6 hours all I wanted was someone to tell me my baby was ok - they had not even so much as checked for a heartbeat. I find this disgusting. 18 weeks pregnant - abdominal pains. Surely that is the first thing that should be checked! Doesn't give me much confidence in having my baby delivered at lincoln hospital

Dear Kitt21,

Thank you for leaving this feedback which, to be honest, I was really shocked to read.

It certainly is not how I would hope our expectant mothers would be treated, and I need to investigate what went so wrong for you.

Could I ask you to contact the PALS team at Lincoln hospital on 01522 707071 or via e-mail at pals@ulh.nhs.uk with your name, date of birth and, if possible, your NHS number.

Once I have this information I can review your visit and share your feedback with the people directly involved. This will allow them to reflect on how their behaviour impacted so negatively on you.

I can only apologise that your experience was so distressing and hope you feel able to contact us so we can ensure it does not happen again.

With best regards,

Sue Glendenning,

Matron, Gynaecology

Dear Kitt21

I am sorry that you had a delay in being assessed in A&E, Over recent days the A&E department has seen an increased workload which has led to some long delays and the availability of cubicles and trolleys has been a challenge for the team to manage.

I apologise that the doctors and nurses were not immediately able to respond when you wanted to pass on your samples, your concerns will be shared with the team. Thank you for sharing your experience with us, it is feedback both positive and negative which enables us to learn and develop as a team.

Regards

Karen Hansord- A&E Sister
