"Great care from ward 36a Glasgow Royal Infirmary"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Gynaecology University Hospital Monklands

(as the patient),

In March 2010 I suffered with severe abdominal pain and bleeding between periods. I ended up ringing NHS 24 at 4am in the morning I was advised because of severity of the pain to go to monklands hospital, as I live on my own and I did not want to worry anyone at this time of the morning a taxi was ordered for the journey to and back from the hospital.

When I arrived I was directed to a waiting area for out of hours doctor, when I went in to see him he was really thorough doing various tests and examinations at all times he treated me with respect and dignity he gave me pain killers and an antibiotic I had told him that I had an appointment the following day with my own GP he advised that I should keep the appointment and he would email her to let her know what he had done.

When I saw my GP the following day she thought that I should go for a scan there was history of ovarian cancer in the family.

I went for the scan at the royal the x-ray department for ultra sound scans was really clean all the nurses and the radiologists who treated me did so with respect and dignity.

When the results came back there was defiantly a cyst dr dove rang me to say that she would refer me to a gynaecologist rather than to wait for another scan.

I saw the assistant for the gynaecologist who arranged for a MRI scan I was just waiting for a date for this.

While I was waiting I was in really severe pain again I got an emergency app at my gp practice and after examining me she sent me to the duty gynaecologist via accident and emergency at Glasgow royal infirmary.

I went to ward 36a. My friend was with me I was seen by a female gynaecologist who was excellent she examined me she ordered blood tests she discussed with me that I could stay in the ward if I would feel better but I would not get a MRI scan any quicker by being in. what she did do though was find out the date for the scan and would try and get it quicker for me. Whilst I was there awaiting the results of blood tests myself and my friend were in a small sitting room that had a TV in it we were offered tea etc and was given iced water for medication. I could not have been treated any better by the doctor and the nurses on this ward. I decided to go home but was given the phone number and was told that I could ring up if I needed any advice.

In July I had a procedure a laparoscopy to remove the cyst and to laser endometriosis (no cancer present thank goodness as this had been a very worrying and stressful time) there was a problem with my bladder I could not pass urine so ended up going home with a catheter then an app to ward 36a at the royal 2 days later at 8am. I went with my friend to this very busy ward I was met by a nurse called Gillian she explained what was going to happen basically retrain the bladder by measuring urine output and then scanning the bladder to make sure that it was emptying. Gillian was really good she showed me to the same sitting room that I had been in before we were brought tea and I was brought a jug of iced water at no time did I feel a nuisance even though this was a really busy gynaecology ward.

All in all I have received excellent service from all departments in the NHS I know that I have got an excellent GP who has supported me through lots of ups and downs. I could not ask for better.

There will be further surgery and because of the way I have been treated so far it takes away anxiety and stress.

Thank you to everyone involved in any part of my care.
