"Problems on ward"

About: Lakeside Unit

(as a relative),

The acute ward.

I think this unit needs investigating.

In my experience most of the staff seem to not be interested in helping any of the patients actually get better. It seems like they just want to medicate them for an easy life.

I know this is the first stop for people with extreme mental health issues but it needs to be run better.

I find the toilets are disgusting - someone needs to clean these more often.

I think that the food is really bad and there's not enough food and patients need to be looked after better and cared about.

Thank you for your comments. I am sorry that you have been told the toilets are disgusting. They are cleaned at least twice daily by domestic staff who are on the ward most of the day and early evening. In addition the nursing staff complete an environmental check every hour (24hrs) and any facilities that require attention are either attended to by the nurse or domestic as required. If toilets or any other areas fall below the expected standard patients are encouraged to alert staff who will ensure the issue is attended to. I will ask ward managers to remember to encourage patients in the community meetings to alert them of any issues as they arise.

I am sorry that you are unhappy with the food. I will be grateful if you can advise the patient to discuss their concerns with the nursing staff as they may be able to facilitate different choices that are more to their liking. Dieticians were involved in the procurement process when the current catering contract was agreed. The food allocated is balanced on the daily requirement for adults. Any special dietary needs can be catered for individually as required.

Medication is an important and very necessary part of the treatment regime for most of our inpatients. I agree that this must of course be complimented with a range of therapeutic interventions to ensure a holistic approach to recovery. Please can you advise the patient to discuss their care plan with their primary nurse, allocated nurse or with the doctor in their next review.

Thank you for your comments you have highlighted the need for the ward staff to address these issues in the community meetings so that patients are encouraged to raise such issues either in the community meetings, directly with staff or in the medical reviews as appropriate.

Update posted by Very concerned relative (a relative)

I don't think this answer is really true.

I will see what changes happen now after this email, I will start keeping a list of daily problems.

I think if all that was said in the email was right then I wouldn't have had to complain at all.

I hope they look into it and investigate this better.

If no changes are made I will complain again and make a real complaint to the hospital directors.
