"My treatment has been beyond praise...."

About: Stoke Mandeville Hospital

Having been diagnosed with colon cancer just before Christmas 2016, I had an operation to remove the offending tissue at Wycombe Hospital, part of this NHS trust, in February 2017 (I have reviewed my exemplary treatment on the Wycombe web site).

As my cancer was Stage 3, chemotherapy was recommended as a follow up treatment and I was assigned to the Cancer Care Unit at Stoke Mandeville.

I am now coming to the end of my chemo and I would like to praise all the staff involved in my treatment. My oncologist has been very clear in her explanations and was up front about risks, side effects and future prognosis. This is what I want from my doctors -- clarity.

The staff in the Cancer Care Unit have been absolutely wonderful. Chemo is not pleasant but the staff have made everything as comfortable as possible and are professional and kind. They are very conscious of infection control and are meticulous in checking the drugs with patients before administration.

During my four-hour sessions, it became clear that they work well together and the harmony among the staff adds to the pleasant atmosphere in the unit. However, they are kept very busy by the innumerable bleeping machines around the bays. The volunteers may only administer tea and biscuits, which are most welcome, but they are equally charming and friendly.

All in all, I have had first-class care through the operation and the chemotherapy and I cannot praise the NHS enough for my treatment. I now have a future. Thank you.
