"doctors and auxiliaries were fantastic"

About: South Tyneside District Hospital

What I liked

doctors and auxiliaries were fantastic

What could be improved

one nurse in particular very stroppy, an old man in next bay was treated very badly he was very old and on his own and was given very little dignity even though he was very polite and kept apologizing for taking up there time. and when i asked about my daughter i was talked down to as if i were an idiot and not a concerned mother my daughter had taken an overdose and was very incoherent she is needle phobic and we had a time trying to get her to let the nurse take a blood sample but she is like this normally not just at this time but the same senior nurse was very off hand and gave the impression she didn't care whether she got the sample or not as if it were my daughters fault and she could get on with it however a very nice auxiliary did an excellent job and got the bloods needed to check for any damage i was also very surprised when the bloods came back ok no damage caused by the paracetamol i was told to take her home even though she was obviously not right talking very strangely and a lot of nonsense which i presumed was the affect of the amitriptyline although this was not explained to me. all in all not very impressed if i had to rate out of ten it would be 5

Anything else?

i was in the caring profession myself for 15yrs i cannot understand why some nurses are so aloof it is a job which requires patience, understanding and respect,in equal measure i know sometimes it is a very difficult job dealing with abusive and awful people but this should not spill over on to other polite and respectful patients turning to them for help, support and answers

Thank you for letting us know of your experience on the ward. I will certainly pass on your positive comments about the doctors and auxiliary nurses.

I also note your less positive impressions regarding nursing staff and would like to look into these further. If you could e mail me further details (for example, which ward was your daughter on) to lorraine.lambert@stft.nhs.uk I will certainly investigate these for you and provide you with a fuller response. In the meantime I offer you my apologies that some aspects of your daughter’s stay were not what you should rightly expect them to be and my assurance that we do look at all feedback and ensure that we discuss it with a view to making service improvements

Kind regards

Lorraine Lambert
